Police: Bath salts found during traffic stop

JAMES ISLAND (WCSC) - Officers arrested two individuals Wednesday after finding bath salts during a traffic stop on Sawgrass Road.

Kellie Furr, 37, and James Richter Jr., 23, were arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance.

According to a report, Richter had to assist Furr with pulling over the vehicle after Furr, the driver of the vehicle, was having a medical issue. EMS and firefighters were called to provide medical assistance.

Police say that when a firefighter placed an oxygen tank on top of a black bag on the front seat, two small clear plastic vials containing a brown crystal substance fell out of the bag.

Officers say they also found a plastic pipe with residue in it underneath Furr's driver-side seat.

When Furr was asked what was in the vials, police say she told them is was bath salts. Furr was taken by EMS to MUSC.

Deputies: Man charged after crashing car into power pole, fleeing scene

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC)- A 23-year-old man is facing charges after Charleston County sheriff's deputies say he fled the scene of a wreck after hitting and snapping a power pole with his car late Sunday night.

Hugh Patrick Wilson is charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a collision with property damage.

The incident happened around 11:30 p.m. Sunday on Folly Road near Albemarle Road, when deputies say Wilson drove off the road, striking the power pole, a business's sign, and a parked SUV sitting in a parking lot.

All five lanes were blocked off in that area, but have since reopened. The incident also caused approximately 200 customers to lose service through mid-morning.

Deputies said that when they arrived at the scene, Wilson took off running and crossed Savannah Highway before running behind a building and jumping a fence. He was detained a short time later.

Police ramp up traffic patrol for Memorial Day weekend

Police ramp up traffic patrol for Memorial Day weekend

CHARLESTON (WCSC) - The Charleston Police Department will be increasing the number of patrol cars on the roads this weekend as part of their city-wide high visibility enforcement initiative.

The Traffic Enforcement Unit will set up multiple safety checkpoint locations supported by roving DUI and Radar Enforcement throughout the city in an attempt to prevent highway deaths and injuries during the Memorial Day weekend.

While Memorial Day is a time to pay honor to those who have died protecting our nation, it is also a holiday when many communities experience an increase in automobile collisions. In many of these events, speeding, alcohol consumption, and lack of seat belt usuage are often contributing factors. Charleston police are encouraging motorists to exercise good judgement, and to plan ahead with designated drivers if need be.

Authorities arrest alleged thief shot by homeowner during robbery

JAMES ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - Deputies arrested a man who was shot by a resident during an alleged vehicle break-in last week on James Island.

The Charleston County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday that they arrested Ronald Patrick McLellan, 32, of James Island.  McClellan is charged with breaking and entering of a motor vehicle and grand larceny.

Authorities also said that the man who shot at McClellan, Wade Martin, has not been charged with a crime.

Last Tuesday, Martin said he saw someone breaking into his truck while he looked on from inside his home. Martin said he then went outside with a gun to confront the man.

As Martin went outside, McClellan got into a red vehicle and drove away. Martin, standing in his driveway, then fired several shots towards the car, according to a police report.

Detectives say that a bullet grazed McLellan's skull. There had been speculation that the resident could face charges.

Jury finds Simmons guilty; judge hands down 25-year sentence

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A little more than an hour passed before jurors returned to a Charleston County courtroom to announce they had found Brandon Simmons guilty of shooting a deputy several times in the face and chest.

Simmons was found guilty of assault and battery with intent to kill. He was also found guilty of possessing a weapon during the course of committing a crime.

Judge Deadra Jefferson sentenced Simmons to the maximum 25-year prison sentence for the assault and the gun possession charges.

The sentences are to run consecutively, Jefferson said.

Before Simmons was sentenced, Lisa DeGrow, former deputy Jeffrey DeGrow's wife, spoke. She said Simmons "left him to die."

"You took away his career," she said.

When the former deputy spoke, he advised Simmons to reflect on his criminal activity. "I hope you take the time that you are in jail to make a change in your life," he said.

DeGrow says he remembers being shot 'every day'

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - At noon on the third day of the trial for a man accused of shooting a Charleston County deputy, the injured deputy took the stand and tearfully told jurors he remembers being shot.

Former deputy Jeffrey DeGrow said he is no longer a member of law enforcement because Brandon Simmons shot him six times.

During his testimony, DeGrow described how he had to chase three men after they refused to stop for him during a burglary investigation. DeGrow said he caught up to one of the men and ordered him to stop. When he rounded a mobile home, he found Simmons standing there with a gun pointed at the deputy, he said.

Simmons fired the weapon and DeGrow fell to the ground, he recalled. He said Simmons stood over him and continued to fire the gun and then checked for the deputy's vital signs.

"The strength of God was with me. I don't know how I got up," DeGrow said.
