CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Lowcountry residents are encouraged to join hundreds of thousands across the nation in taking a 30-minute walk on Wednesday to improve heart health.

Wednesday, April 3 is National Walking Day, and The American Heart Association, MUSC Health, and The InterTech Group is getting in on the action. They are asking the public to take 30 minutes of their day to take a brisk walk.

Experts say adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, but less than 50-percent of adults hit that number.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The American Cancer Society is preparing to launch a new research study, and is looking for help from Lowcountry residents.

Men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer are asked to enroll in the American Cancer Society's Cancer Prevention Study-3. The study will be used to help researchers understand lifestyle, environmental and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer.

The ACS is looking for 800 residents in Charleston to take place in the study. The public can enroll online at cps3charleston.org for one of the following dates and locations:

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Brawn and brains will collide on the banks of the Cooper River as hundreds of the region's best athletes compete for cash prizes, pride, and their personal best at Integrity's Revenge: The Battle for Charleston Harbor on October 6-7, 2012 at the Maritime Center in downtown, Charleston.

This is the second year for the competition, which attracts hundreds of Crossfit diehards from around the lowcountry and the entire US. There are currently 400 athletes registered to compete. Integrity's Revenge is part of the 2012 Garage Game Series and hosted by Crossfit Integrity in West Ashley.

Gift of Life 5K/2K this Saturday

JAMES ISLAND (WCSC) - The 7th Annual LifePoint Gift of Life 5K/2K Run/Walk will be held this Saturday at James Island County Park.

LifePoint hosts this annual event to bring awareness to the great need for more organ, eye and tissue donors, as well as to help celebrate the lives of those who have
received a transplant. Participating in this year’s race will be numerous recipients and donor families from across South Carolina along with veteran race participants from throughout the Southeast.

6 elementary schools receive new PE equipment

LOWCOUNTRY (WCSC) - A Charleston-based fitness company called GenMove has teamed up with McDonald's and six elementary schools in the Lowcountry to help teach kids healthy living habits.

McDonald's is donating GenMove packs, $2500 equipment sets which include balls, cones, and a set of physical goals to meet.  Physical Education teachers at each school have gone through special traing to learn how to teach the methods.

GenMove CEO Grant Cheffer says there's more scientific evidence these days showing the correlation between mental and physical development.
