Charleston Co. State of the School's Address set for May 1

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Charleston County School District Superintendent Nancy McGinley will go over public school accomplishments and future goals at the 2013 State of the School's Address on May 1.

The address will be held in the TD Arena Hospitality Suite on Wednesday, May 1 at 11: 45 a.m. McGinley will be joined by local elected officials and community and business partners.

Superintendent McGinley is expected to reveal what CCSD plans to accomplish over the next year and over the next five years. 

She will also touch on the progress Charleston County public schools have made in certain areas, as well as areas of growth.

JAMES ISLAND (WCSC) - Fourth and fifth grade art students at James Island Elementary School recently got a special visit from a local artist.

Jonathan Green shared his new book, "Seeking" with the students of Mrs. Michelle Corbett's art classes. Her students have been studying Green's technique of painting and his lowcountry inspiration.

Green's new book displays his lowcountry-themed art along with poems by a number of renowned authors.

This was Green's first visit to James Island Elementary School.

Harbor View Elementary School encouraged students to eat healthy and get active with their first annual PEP night.

The School Wellness Committee held PEP night on Friday, February 1. PEP stands for “Play More, Eat Less, Power Down.”

Students and parents took part in hula hooping, golfing, dancing, and jumped on a pogo stick to have a good time without video games and television. The Wellness Committee also provided some healthy snacks such as trail mix and granola for hungry participants.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Charleston County students will take part in a district-wide spelling bee Thursday night.

The Charleston County School District spelling be will be held tonight at 5:30 p.m. in the first floor boardroom of the CCSD District Office located at 75 Calhoun Street.

The annual spelling bee will narrow the field down to 18 students who will advance to the Lowcountry's SpellBound.

Charleston Co. School District to honor teachers at Winter Gala

 

Charleston County School District will celebrate its top teachers with a special gala on February 22.

“An Evening with the Stars Winter Gala: International Indulgence” will honor all school-based Teachers of the Year by presenting them with a personalized international flag for their work. Students, families and community members are invited to attend the Feb. 22 event to show their appreciation.

Flags will be made available to the public for purchase for $5. Those who purchase flags can include a special message to show their appreciation (50-word limit), and select which educator will receive the flag.

Lowcountry students to take part in Poetry Out Loud competition

 

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - College of Charleston will host a poetry contest on January 13 that will feature high school students from throughout the Lowcountry.

The South Carolina Region 3 Poetry Out Loud Competition will be January 13 at 1:30 p.m. in the Stern Student Center Building at College of Charleston. The winner of the competition will go on to the State Poetry Out Loud contest in Columbia, S.C.

The 11 high school students taking part in the competition have already won school-wide Poetry Out Loud contests. This year's participants include students from Ashley Hall, Berkeley, James Island Charter, Wando, and many others.

Judging the regional competition will be Conseula Francis, a CofC English professor, and Martha Peeples, a professional writer.

The winner of the SC Poetry Out Loud Competition will go on to compete at the National Final on April 29-30, where $50,000 in awards and school stipends will be handed out.

Students dress for success during Red Ribbon Week

 

JAMES ISLAND (WCSC) - Doctors, firefighters, tennis players were just some of the occupations students at James Island Elementary school were dressed up as recently to celebrate Red Ribbon Week.

Students were allowed to dress up as the career of their dreams to promote healthy choices during Red Ribbon Week.  The event taught children that success in school would lead to a bright future, allowing students to become the very occupation they dressed up as.

The students also took part in a number of other activities, including voting on the best healthy choice for school success and making posters of their favorite healthy choices.
