Holiday prompts changes to garbage, yard waste pick-up schedule

CHARLESTON COUNTY (WCSC) - The garbage and yard waste collection in Charleston County will change a bit this week because of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Monday routes will be collected on Tuesday, Tuesday routes will be collected on Wednesday, Wednesday routes will be collected on Thursday, and Thursday routes will be collected on Friday.

As for yard waste, the same one-day delay rules apply, except for residents whose yard waste is regularly collected on Thursday.  In their case, yard waste won't be collected until the following Thursday.

A Derby of a Sale at Hot Wheels

JAMES ISLAND (WCSC) - The Lowcountry Highrollers, the Charleston area's own roller derby team, is holding their first ever yard sale this weekend at Hot Wheels on Folly Road.

The derby girls will be out their peddling their wares from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. and all the money raised will go directly to the league, helping to fund the 2012 season.  Donations for the sale are also appreciated.

Hot Wheels is located at 1523 Folly Road.

Garbage schedule changes for Thanksgiving

CHARLESTON (WCSC) - As usual, there will be a slight change to your garbage collection schedule on the week of Thanksgiving this year.

Thanksgiving Day will be observed as a city holiday.  As a result, Thursday routes will be collected on Friday.  No other routes will be changed.

The website SweetAngelGifts.com is holding a weeklong charity event by donating 100% of its proceeds to multiple charities from Oct. 10 through Oct. 16.

Paper bag ordinance goes into effect Saturday

CHARLESTON COUNTY (WCSC) -  It's the last week for Charleston County residents to use plastic bags to store their yard debris.

Starting this Saturday, October 1, yard debris will only be picked up if it is contained in paper bags. 

Charleston County Council are instituting the ordinance because paper is more conducive to composting.  The change is expected to save space and help the County reach it's 40% recycling goal.
